If your doctor has recommended an ultrasound, you’re not alone. Ultrasound is one of the most trusted and widely used diagnostic imaging tools. At CAMIS, we proudly offer ultrasound services across Central Alberta, including Red Deer, to support your healthcare journey with expert care and timely access.
Whether you’re navigating a pregnancy, investigating pain, or monitoring a chronic condition, here’s what you need to know about the types of ultrasound services we offer:
General Diagnostic Ultrasound
What It’s For:
This ultrasound is used to examine internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, thyroid, bladder, and more. It helps detect abnormalities like cysts, stones, or nodules and is often used when investigating unexplained symptoms or abnormal bloodwork.
How It’s Performed:
A technologist applies a water-based gel to your skin and moves a handheld device (called a transducer) over the area being scanned. This produces real-time images of your internal organs using sound waves—completely safe and non-invasive.
Time Estimate:
Approximately 30–45 minutes
General Prep Overview:Prep instructions vary depending on the body part being scanned. For example, you may need to fast or arrive with a full bladder.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound
What It’s For:
MSK ultrasound is used to assess soft tissues like muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. It’s ideal for diagnosing injuries, inflammation, and chronic pain in joints such as the shoulder, knee, wrist, and ankle.
How It’s Performed:
You may be asked to move the affected area during the scan. The technologist will use the transducer to examine how your soft tissues behave in real time, perfect for dynamic joint or tendon assessments.
Time Estimate:
30–60 minutes, depending on the area
General Prep Overview:
No special preparation required. Wear loose clothing if possible.
Prenatal (Obstetrical) Ultrasound
What It’s For:
Prenatal ultrasound monitors your baby’s growth, health, and development at all stages of pregnancy. Depending on your doctor’s recommendation, you may receive one or more of the following scans:
- Dating Scan – Confirms pregnancy and estimates your due date
- Anatomy Scan – Performed between 18–22 weeks to check fetal development
- Growth Scan – Monitors baby’s size and position later in pregnancy
- Targeted/Follow-up Scan – For closer monitoring if needed
How It’s Performed:
A gel is applied to your abdomen and a transducer is used to capture real-time images of your baby. This scan is safe for both parent and baby and uses no radiation.
Time Estimate:
- Dating Scan: 15–30 minutes
- Anatomy Scan: 45–60 minutes
- Growth/Follow-Up: 15–30 minutes
General Prep Overview:
You may be asked to arrive with a full bladder, especially early in pregnancy.
